History and development of the Mercantile Navy List
What it Aims to do
The Mercantile Navy List is a comprehensive annual register of British ships. Although less detailed than Lloyd`s Register of Ships , it is invaluable because it covers all British registered vessels, down to the very smallest. It was published from 1850 to 1977.
The Mercantile Navy List is the Government`s official list of all British-registered merchant vessels. The definition of British vessels is broad and includes most of those registered in countries of the British empire and, later, certain Commonwealth countries. Details were taken from Customs registers.
